I am beginning to wonder about the office building that houses our company, WayForward Technologies. This week marks the fourth time that we have been evacuated by the Fire Department. In the past, there was a small electrical fire, then two separate incidents of possibly toxic fumes. This time noxious fumes were again the culprit.
In addition, there are the elevators. The fear that they inspire is tempered merely by the fact that the building has only three floors. Soon after moving in to our suite, we noticed that the elevator permits had expired. Not only did they expire, but they went un-inspected for nearly a year. This wouldn't have been an issue, except that the elevators genuinely feel unsafe. They shake, rattle and groan; sometimes dropping or lurching as they approach a floor.
Now keep in mind, that this is not a low-end office. We share the building with Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, and several attorneys. I am not at liberty to say what our monthly lease is, but it's certainly not cheap.
On the other hand, location is everything, and for that very reason I would hate to move to a different building. I love the fact that my commute is a mere 2.4 miles. I love the fact that I can eat somewhere different every day of the week. Best of all, I love the strange looks that we get from all of the suits in the area.
So, I guess we will put up with the intimidating elevators and the odd emergency evacuation... For now. |
