Today, I purchased a Sampo DVE-632CF home theater DVD player, and I am quite impressed. It is likely that you've never heard of Sampo, and I admit that I hadn't either. They are a small, Taiwan-based manufacturer that makes a number of 'no-name' products. So, what is so cool about a device that is both 'no-name' and manufactured in Taiwan? Let me tell you:
On top of being able to play mp3s and show jpegs burned on CD-R and CD-RW... it's hackable!!! You can flash the unit's firmware by simply loading a properly formatted CD. This allows you to do fun little things like... disabling Macrovision (that's the annoying 'copy protection' crap that prevents you from running your DVD signal through your VCR). You can also turn your unit into a Multi-Region device (so you can play Japanese or European DVDs).
On top of that, this unit has a Compact Flash slot in it!!! That means I can take the memory card straight out of my digital camera and view the photographs directly on the TV. The CF slot will also accept mp3s. In addition, the CF slot uses a standard IDE interface allowing the more adventurous owner (me!) to drop in a hard-drive for mp3 storage!
Hehe... this is gonna be fun!
Oh - I forgot to mention - it was only $160US with tax and shipping! :^D
[edit] Wow, I just reread my own post - do I sound like a Sampo shill or what? [/edit]
