Fundamentalists frighten me. Seriously. Christian, Muslim, Jewish, whatever... it doesn't matter. It all boils down to literalism. Literalism allows one to rationalize the irrational; to support ideas and causes that would quickly collapse under the weight of their own illogical structure - if only they weren't buoyed up by belief systems that demand absolute adherence to sophistic, if not down right absurd, ideas and concepts.
It's pretty easy these days for the average American to see the terrible outcome of certain brands of Islamic Fundamentalism. But don't let the awful tragedy of September 11th and the not-so-subtle spin of White House press releases lead you to believe that Islamic terrorists are the cause of the turmoil we see in the world today. U.S. Christian Fundamentalists have played a far greater part in the unfolding of today's conflicted Middle East than most American's are aware of. Much of the Bush administration's foreign policy is driven by the goals of the Christian Right, some of whom have such a literal belief in the prophecies leading up to the Rapture and the Second Coming that they are actually trying to fulfill them. They feel that the deteriorating situation in Israel and the conflict in Iraq are not only signs of the end days, but necessary steps to bring about the return of Christ and thus, are to be encouraged.
Frightening.
