Four days ago, the Department of Homeland Security issued a vague warning about a possible terrorist attack aimed at disrupting the presidential elections in November. Quoting senior intelligence sources, CNN reported1 that bin Laden and his top lieutenants are directly guiding the newly threatened attack. Very scary stuff, right?
Conversely, CBS reported2 today that bin Laden is isolated and cut off from his own organization. The report went on to say that bin Laden has been removed from the day-to-day operations of al Qaeda and that capturing or killing him would make little difference to terrorist operations around the world. Who did CBS site as the source of that little tidbit? U.S. intelligence sources, of course.
Interesting, eh? I really don't think that CNN and CBS are the actual problem here. To my mind, this is just another example of the double-speak that the administration is fostering. First, warn the public about an unspecific terror threat (i.e. remind them that they should still be afraid by invoking the name of the 9/11 mastermind). Second, wait four days then explain why Osama bin Laden isn't important (i.e. why it's okay that we haven't caught him yet).
Double-speak.
On a brighter note, some new anti-Bush buddy icons are up!
