As people began to evolve to have minds capable of predicting death or at least able to realize that each of us will die, religion and belief in something more after life here became necessary for sanity. It keeps people weak of mind comfortable. Religion was also used economically. Before the Industrial Reveloution in Euprope, the wealth was concentrated in 2% of the population mostly amoung land owners. To keep it this way, they would simply say all good people will get just rewards once in Heaven. This explains the Muslim extemists who feel blowing themselves up earn them 3 rivers, honey, milk, and 40 virgins.
